The five carport roof designs
| Design | Look & fit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat / mono-pitch | Clean, low, modern; slight slope to drain | Modern homes, wide plot spans, lowest cost |
| Pitched (gable) | Peaked roof matching a house roof | Face-brick and traditional East Rand homes |
| Lean-to | Attached to the house or shed wall, sloping away | Side driveways, using a wall for one side |
| Cantilever | No front posts, clear span | Narrow driveways, trailer reversing |
All can be built in steel, aluminium or timber; the design is the shape, the material is a separate choice covered on the steel, aluminium and wooden carport pages.
Span and height come before looks
On the East Rand the design starts with what has to fit under it. A four-bay flat roof at a 2.7–3.0 m beam is the plot workhorse because it clears a caravan and spans a boat-and-trailer; a lean-to off a shed wall suits a smallholding where a structure already stands. Pitch still matters against the weather — a real fall of at least 5° so a summer downpour sheds fast and hail rolls off rather than sitting — and the vehicle-driven sizing is worked on the carport sizes guide.
Designing to the council plan
An East Rand carport design has to satisfy the City of Ekurhuleni building plan, and on an agricultural holding the zoning rules differ from a suburban stand. KB Carports designs to those rules and supplies the drawing — the process is in do you need council approval. Once the design is set, price it on the carport prices in Ekurhuleni page.
Common questions
What carport design is best for an East Rand plot?
A flat or mono-pitch four-bay design at a 2.7–3.0 m beam height is the East Rand plot workhorse — it clears a caravan, spans a boat-and-trailer, and costs less than a pitched roof over the same span. It still needs a real fall so storm water and hail shed off.
Does carport roof pitch matter on the East Rand?
Yes. An East Rand carport roof needs a fall of at least 5° so summer downpours shed fast and hail rolls off rather than pooling, which matters more on the exposed open-veld plots. A pitched gable drains fastest; even a flat-look roof must slope.
Can you design a carport to match my house and the council rules?
Yes. KB Carports designs the carport roof style, colour and pitch to match your house and to satisfy the City of Ekurhuleni building plan, including the different zoning rules on an agricultural holding, and supplies the drawing.
